Dermaplaning (Group training)

Dermaplaning is a method of exfoliation that consists of using a 10, 10r or 14-gauge scalpel, with a number three blade handle. It gently scrapes off the top layer of dulling dead skin cells in order to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. It also eliminates the peach fuzz (vellus hair) that cakes up in makeup leaving the surface very smooth. Dermaplaning removes surface debris from the skin with custom dermaplaning blades. 

Course structure

You will be provided with pre-course reading which will cover basic anatomy and physiology, and health and safety. This will be recapped in your session.

The dermaplaning course will be completed in one day between 10am-3pm (times may vary). You will learn the theory of the treatment as well as carry out practical assessments on live models.

A practical assessment is carried out using a model. Allowing you the maximum time during the training to work upon acquiring and demonstrating the required technique. We recommend bringing your own model. If you can’t, let the Academy know at least 48 hours before your course. The Academy can support with finding you a model for a £10 admin fee.

Course content

• Contraindications of dermaplaning treatment:
  • Identifying conditions such as active acne, sunburn or open wounds that may contraindicate dermaplaning.
  • Understanding when to postpone treatment or seek medical clearance for certain clients.
• Contra-actions of dermaplaning treatment:
  • Recognising potential adverse reactions such as redness, irritation or sensitivity post-treatment.
  • Implementing appropriate measures to alleviate discomfort and promote skin healing.
• Understanding the kit required:
  • Familiarising with the necessary tools and supplies for dermaplaning, including a surgical scalpel, sterile blades and antiseptic solutions.
  • Ensuring the availability of protective gear for both the practitioner and the client.
• Successfully carrying out dermaplaning on a live model:
  • Practicing proper technique and pressure control to achieve smooth and even exfoliation.
  • Demonstrating effective communication and professionalism throughout the treatment process.
• Aftercare for Clients:
  • Providing detailed instructions on post-treatment skincare, including gentle cleansing, moisturising and sun protection.
  • Advising against exfoliating products or harsh treatments for a specified period to avoid irritation.
  • Monitoring client progress and addressing any concerns or questions they may have during the recovery period.

Additional information

We do not include any kits with our training course offers. However we will provide any equipment required to complete the practical training on the day. We like to encourage you to find brands, products and tools that suit you. Your tutor will be able to support you with products and tools advice on the day, and you can also refer to your course manual for this information.

Upon completion of the dermaplaning course you will receive an accredited qualification. With this you will also be able to obtain insurance. We recommend you check that your insurance company insures the treatment and whether that will incur any additional costs to you before purchasing this course.

You are covered under our insurance policy on the day of your training. However as soon as you are off site you will be required to have your own insurance. If you are a new student you can obtain a student only policy (usually around £20 a year) until you are charging for treatments. If you already have insurance please ensure you contact your insurance company to add your new service to your policy. Insurance is YOUR responsibility.
