VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering

The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering is an extensive programme designed to provide you with advanced skills and knowledge in the field of barbering. Throughout the course, you will learn a wide range of techniques essential for professional barbering, including haircutting, styling, shaving, beard grooming and hair colouring. You will study topics such as client consultation, scalp care, health and safety regulations and salon management. The diploma combines theoretical learning with practical training, allowing you to develop proficiency in various barbering services. Upon completion, you are prepared to work as a skilled barber in a barber shop, salon or even start your own barbering business.

Course structure 

The qualification is delivered through a blended learning approach – a combination of traditional classroom teaching (face-to-face) and online learning/independent study.

• Classroom – full-day sessions to begin each unit
• Independent study, reading and research with remote tutor support – recommended self-study of 8/10 hours per week

Course content

• Provide client consultation services:

  • Gain skills in assessing hair and facial features to recommend suitable barbering services.
• Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques:
  • Master various haircutting methods such as scissor over comb, clipper cutting and razor cutting.
  • Practice blending and texturizing techniques to achieve desired styles and finishes.
• Design and create a range of facial hair types:
  • Learn to shape and style different facial hair types, including beards, moustaches and sideburns.
  • Explore techniques for detailing and refining facial hair designs to enhance client appearance.
• Provide shaving services:
  • Understand wet shaving principles and use of straight razors and safety razors.
  • Practice proper shaving techniques, including pre-shave preparation, shaving and post-shave care.
• Design and create patterns in hair:
  • Develop skills in creating intricate patterns and designs using clippers and trimmers.
  • Explore different hair design techniques, including freehand designs, geometric patterns and hair tattooing.
