Course Content

Unit 1: The Essential Reformer Exercises

  • 1.1) Introduction to the Reformer Course:
    This unit offers an overview of the Reformer Pilates course, outlining its objectives, structure, and expectations. Participants will gain insight into what to expect throughout the training programme.
  • 1.2) The Foundation exercises for the Reformer:
    Participants will delve into fundamental Reformer exercises, focusing on building a strong base of understanding and proficiency. Emphasis will be placed on mastering foundational movements essential for progressing in Reformer Pilates.
  • 1.3) The 5 Basic Principles for Reformer Pilates:
    This module introduces the five core principles that underpin Reformer Pilates practice. Participants will learn how to apply these principles effectively to enhance movement efficiency, alignment, and overall performance on the Reformer.

Unit 2: How to structure a Reformer class

  • 2.1) How to operate the Reformer:
    Participants will learn the ins and outs of operating the Reformer machine, including setup, adjustments, and safety considerations. Practical demonstrations and hands-on practice will ensure proficiency in using this essential equipment.
  • 2.2) How to teach as a new Reformer Teacher ABCs:
    This unit focuses on the fundamentals of teaching Reformer Pilates, covering essential teaching techniques, communication skills, and effective cueing strategies. Participants will learn how to engage and instruct clients with confidence and clarity.
  • 2.3) How to structure a Reformer class – Preparation phase; Main phase; Closing phase:
    Participants will explore the key components of structuring a Reformer Pilates class, including warm-up, main exercises, and cool-down. Emphasis will be placed on creating balanced and effective class sequences to meet the needs of diverse clients.
  • 2.4) The Six Start Positions:
    This module covers the six foundational starting positions used in Reformer Pilates exercises. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of each position's purpose and how to effectively transition between them during workouts.
  • 2.5) The Principles of Pilates & the ABCs:
    Participants will revisit the core principles of Pilates and how they apply specifically to Reformer exercises. This module aims to deepen understanding of the Pilates methodology and its integration into Reformer Pilates instruction.

Unit 3: Fundamentals in Anatomy for the Reformer

  • 3.1) Movement at the Spine:

  • 3.2) Movement at the Pelvis:

Unit 4: The History of the Classical Reformer

  • 4.2) The Classical Reformer Repertoire:
    This module introduces participants to the classical repertoire of Reformer Pilates exercises. Participants will learn about the foundational exercises developed by Joseph Pilates and their variations, focusing on preserving the integrity of classical Pilates practice.

Unit 5: Equipment used with the Reformer

  • 5.1) Jump boards; Magic Ring; Hand & Wrist Weights; Balls; Poles:
    Participants will be introduced to various equipment commonly used in conjunction with the Reformer. This unit will cover the purpose, benefits, and proper usage of each piece of equipment to enhance Reformer Pilates workouts and client experience.

Unit 6: Assessment for the Reformer

  • 6.1) Theory Assessment – 20 Questions:
    Participants will undergo a theory assessment covering key concepts, principles, and techniques learned throughout the course.
  • 6.2) Design a Lesson Plan for Whole Body Workout:
    Participants will design a comprehensive lesson plan for a whole-body Reformer Pilates workout, incorporating a variety of exercises and targeting different muscle groups.
  • 6.3) Design a Lesson Plan for a Multilevel Progressive Workout:
    Participants will design a lesson plan for a multilevel progressive Reformer Pilates class, catering to clients with varying levels of experience and fitness abilities.
  • 6.4) Design a Lesson Plan for an Equipment Workout:
    Participants will create a lesson plan specifically focusing on Reformer Pilates exercises utilizing additional equipment, such as balls, rings, or weights.
  • 6.5) PRACTICAL Teach a 45-minute Multilevel Class:
    Participants will demonstrate their teaching skills by leading a 45-minute multilevel Reformer Pilates class, applying effective cueing, modifications, and progressions to accommodate diverse clients.
  • 6.6) PRACTICAL Teach a 45-minute Equipment Class:
    Participants will lead a 45-minute Reformer Pilates class incorporating various pieces of equipment, demonstrating proficiency in equipment setup, usage, and exercise selection.
  • 6.7) Complete a Self-Evaluation for one class:
    Participants will reflect on their teaching performance and class delivery, identifying strengths, areas for improvement, and actionable steps for growth.
